Landhuis Ascencion - Artisan's Market
The Ascencion plantation was founded in 1672 on the grounds of a former village of the Arawak people. Over the centuries the plantation has had a focus on maize, cotton, beans, cattle, and sheep. These days, although the Landhuis can be rented for meetings, the emphasis for many people is the anticipation of the monthly open house which features an artisan’s market of various art forms and cultural music and dance.
On the first Sunday of each month, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm join the friendly island people of Curaçao as the doors of Ascencion are opened to the public. The morning begins with an ecumenical church service held in the chapel. Also beginning at 10:00, the Landhuis is open with local artists and hobbyists set up throughout the building.
After strolling through the Landhuis and purchasing that one-of-a-kind art piece, you can walk through to the patio, purchase a refreshing drink and snack, and sit in the shade to relax as the island breeze adds its distinctive sound to the local band featuring cultural instruments. A group of local dancers showcase the grace and form of cultural dance and invite audience members to join.
Enjoy a piece of history as you read various descriptions of the past and envision an earlier time as you gaze out upon the surrounding landscape.
